Over the past few years, the film industry has been conquered by superheroes and villains, but 2019 will mark the year we will see the most films in this genre hit the big screen.

Below are the eight superhero and villain movies that will be making their debut:

Captain  Marvel (March 8)

Unlike other Marvel universe films, this story, set in the 90s’, will not reveal the source of Carol Danvers’ (a.k.a Captain Marvel’s) powers. However, Commander Danvers will have to use her supernatural skills to fight off the Skrulls and Kree, two dangerous, destructive races that become a direct threat when they start a war involving Earth.

Shazam! (April 5)

Can you imagine if you could become a superhero by just saying the word “shazam”? Well, that’s exactly what happens to 14-year-old Billy Batson every time he says it. The film shows what happens when you combine adolescence with super powers. We’ll see how  Batson learns to control his powers to defend himself against the forces of evil, controlled by Doctor Thaddeus Sivana.

Hellboy (April 12)

The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) asks Hellboy to fight the ancient spirit Nimue, also known as the Blood Queen. Nimue learned her spells from the wizard Merlin, who was her lover, but she has since imprisoned him. Hellboy’s task? Destroy the sprit and rescue Merlin.

The Avengers: Endgame (April 26)

This is one of the most eagerly-awaited films of 2019 (its trailer was one of the most-viewed in the 24 hours after its launch). In Endgame, we’ll see what happens when Thanos kills half the universe’s living beings and how the surviving Avengers will try to fix the situation—with the help of size-changing superhero Ant-Man, who seems to be joining forces with them.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (June 7)

This time around, the X-Men will face one of their most powerful foes yet—Jean Grey, one of their own. Jean becomes incredibly powerful (as well as unstable), endangering her colleagues while they try to save the planet from aliens seeking to conquer the galaxy. As a side note, this will also be one of the last X-Men franchise films with 20th Century Fox before its merger with Disney.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 5)

Peter Parker takes a much-needed vacation with his friends, but just can’t seem leave his life as Spider-Man behind. A villain shows up to endanger his loved ones, and Parker will have to fight in order to save them.

The New Mutants (August 2)

Another one of the last films before 20th Century Fox leaves the X-Men behind, The New Mutants is an important part of the X-Men saga. It tells us the story of the latest generation of mutants, who were tortured for (presumably) being dangerous and must use their powers and skills to survive.

Joker (October 4)

Many are waiting for this film to come out because of acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix’s performance. It will break from what we know about one of DC’s favorite villains, delving into the origin story of Arthur Fleck—a man who, after being rejected, went down in history as the Joker.
