That’s Entertainment / Television Continues to Dominate Our Leisure Time

Jonathan Blum

It’s no secret the entertainment world has evolved considerably in recent years, from distributing and obtaining content solely through the traditional screen to an endless array of options which adapt to each user profile. We can now access programs through practically any device: televisions, computers, tablets, and smart phones, etc. and not just in a linear way, but also through different streaming services.

But which device do audiences prefer? The English company, Sky, undertook a study based on content consumption trends in the United States and the United Kingdom which concluded that television continues to be the preferred content consumption device, however it is closely followed by computers and smart phones.

We can now see a clear trend: the majority of viewers use a second device while watching television. This is a huge challenge for content producers as they have to strive harder each day to maintain viewers’ attention. Content per se is no longer “king” but conversation about content is.

This is one reason why it is so important for industry players to consider 360° strategies for their formats. They need to develop independent content for each platform and take into account social media and even streaming channels. It is not just about adapting to the new game rules, but capitalizing on the alternative use given to mobile devices by users to achieve greater engagement with content.
