What’s New on Social Media

Jonathan Blum

Digital media played a key role in 2017 with the rise of new phenomena; Some made us laugh while others kept us informed of what was happening around the world, although not all of it was pleasant. It is clear they are very useful, so what can we expect in 2018?

It is that time of the year when we evaluate which business strategies worked and what should change. We also start setting next year’s objectives and, above all, defining how we will go about doing so. But for this to happen, we must continue to track the latest trends, as these projections may or may not come to fruition in 2018.

According to a study conducted by The Creative Group, in which advertising experts were asked their opinions, the following are topics social media advertisers should keep in mind, going from most to least popular:

Younger generations have proven to be most loyal to brands that give them personalized service, which is why 33% of those surveyed agreed that social messaging will be trending over the next few months. This is evidenced by the fact that more and more companies are offering customer service through online chat programs.

In second place is the importance of video on social media, which became very prominent in 2017 thanks to changes in platform algorithms. This type of content should continue to factor into social media strategies.

Influencer Marketing comes in third. Influencer mentions have always has a positive impact, but they became particularly popular this year. However, it is important to be very careful about the people you choose to successfully reach our objectives, ensuring they are not detractors. Also, try to ensure the mention is as organic as possible, because sometimes they do not seem very authentic—and audiences will notice.

In last place we have augmented and virtual reality, which is possibly so low on the list because the technology needed to develop this type of content is not yet readily available. It may only be a matter of time; Perhaps we will be talking about how trendy it has become by the end of next year.

The new year brings an opportunity to improve. Although the list above is not entirely unexpected, it gives us an idea of what may happen and points to increased use of technology and emphasis on creativity. Now that you know what 2018 is likely to bring for digital media, it is time to start designing your 2018 strategy.
