Mobile apps: An efficient method to rebuild the social structure

Jonathan Blum

Global contribution is easier today; a single click can actually make the difference.

There are many vulnerability issues that affect societies, where resource and education shortages give rise to inequality; this is why solidarity is becoming an essential human value, which contributes to improving the quality of life of those that need it.

But, which factors add value to social development?

A globalized world, dominated by Internet and social networks, has allowed continents to be interconnected – more than ever. Today we can know in real time, what’s happening on the other side of the globe; giving rise to a sense of ownership and identification among people, to the different realities affecting the world.

A call for action

Social networks have gained strength over time, and have become fundamental channels for altruism and cooperation. Knowing what happens encourages people to support social causes, making them feel that their consciousness and support have contributed to a better world. Aware of the essential role of mobile devices within society, many mobile apps have been developed; apps that allow donations, volunteer work and filing complaints to make a change.

Certain apps, in both IOS and Android, empower us to support social causes. The following are some that are changing the world and making mobile devices drivers of social development.

Charity Miles

This free app allows the count of each step. It has a group of sponsors that donate 10 cents per mile, for biking, and 25 cents per mile for walkers and runners. Once you choose the organization to which you want to donate (a list of organizations is deployed), you upload your results and the donation process will be completed.

Donate a Photo

Save the Children joined Johnson & Johnson to create this app. For every photo you share through the app, Johnson & Johnson donates 1 dollar. One photo per day may be donated. Your photos will never be used for commercial purposes

Share The Meal

Share The Meal is the first application designed to fight hunger worldwide. It’s an initiative of the World Food Programme of the United Nations (WFP) – WFP is 100% funded through voluntary contributions; making every donation extremely important.  Through the app you can donate money to cover food for refugee children, among others.

Google One Today

This Google app allows donations to different causes, showing the results that each donation will have. The user chooses a cause from those listed in the app. Causes such as providing shelter, food, water and education to orphans around the globe, providing pneumonia treatment and training for handicapped persons, so they can learn to develop a specific work, between others.

Charity Navigator

This app allows you to find charities, offering a classified guide with almost 7,800 organizations, based on their financial statements, accountability and transparency. No advertising or donations are accepted from the organizations assessed, ensuring impartial evaluations, nor do they charge public for the information they provide. Most organizations are in the US; however, you can also find organizations from Ecuador or Syria.

Feeling satisfaction when helping those in need is perhaps one of the most rewarding feelings; we can all be part of the change we want to see in the world, it’s just a matter of will, and a simple click.
