The battle between IOS and Android

Jonathan Blum

In each stage of life, the human being competes to achieve something. To fulfill an objective within a defined term, find a better job, a quick professional promotion, scholarships, etc.

When making an analogy of the above argument with corporate behaviors, nothing different can be evidenced: competing to be number one in revenues and profits, building the best products, offering the best services, become the best place where to work, and ranking first in corporate reputation.

The eternal race to become leader in a specific market is seen every day with two telecommunications giants: Apple and Android. This marathon competition is measured based on economic return and production since 2007, thanks to the work done by Gartner or Nielsen.

Where did the mobile phone industry increase, therefore, that of the operating systems, took place? Internet Trends 2016 tells us.

During the first days of the battle, both companies started from the scratch and under similar conditions. As the years passed, Android got a stronger position in markets such as India, China, or Indonesia. Why? Brands such as Samsung and Huawei, which install the Android system in their devices, consolidate their leading position because consumers do not invest in high-end mobile phones.

Android took the lead in the sold unit indicator in 2011, with just under 300 million mobiles sold to the audience. This overwhelming success is evidenced in the results shown below.

The opposite behavior is seen in the stock market performance for both companies. Apple had the best indicators with 14% of earnings per share, 10% above Android, with 4% of earnings per share, as shown in the following comparative table:

When analyzing this last-10-year table, the research concludes that Android has had a 7% ongoing growth, while iOS showed an average decrease of 11%, keeping its signature product at a constant price of US$700.

Despite the strong storytelling related to the Apple world, the number of products and the huge mobilization implemented to launch new products, Android has key allies, such as the “Asian tigers”- Huawei, Samsung, LG, Lenovo –among other mobile brands that have not yet developed their own operating systems.
